1937 - The Marijuana tax act places tax on all cannabis products, discriminating hemp production
- 1942 – USDA initiates the “Hemp for Victory” Program as part of the WWII effort. Farmers produce over 125,000 acres of hemp in the United States, supporting the war effort

1970 – The Controlled Substance Act classifies hemp as a Schedule I narcotic making hemp agriculture and production illegal in the United States as part of the War on Drugs
- 2015 – The Industrial Hemp Farming Act is introduced in the House and Senate as a first attempt to fully legalize hemp2018 – An Amendment to the Farm Bill removes hemp and hemp products from the Schedule I Substance list
